INTRODUCTION
The Fisheries Directorate has announced a comprehensive new strategy aimed at promoting sustainable fishing practices and ensuring the long-term health of marine ecosystems. Aiming for cleaner seas and thriving fish stocks by 2030, the initiative focuses on reducing overfishing, protecting biodiversity, and supporting coastal communities that depend on fishing for their livelihoods.
The strategy includes several key measures: the introduction of seasonal restrictions to protect spawning periods, updated catch limits for at-risk species, expansion of marine protected areas, and support for the adoption of environmentally friendly fishing techniques. In addition, training programs will be offered to help fishers transition toward more sustainable methods.
This approach reflects a growing recognition of the need to balance economic interests with environmental stewardship. By setting clear goals and timelines, the Directorate seeks to position the fishing industry as a leader in marine conservation while maintaining its role as a vital part of the national economy.
Implementation of the first phase is expected to begin in the coming months, with full integration of the plan scheduled over the next five years.
